I was given a used Kindle with a lot of content on it after mine broke. I de-registered it, but am waiting to register it until I find out how to keep the new kindle’s content and add my own. Any suggestions?

You can’t. At least I don’t know of any way to keep old content and also get new content. Perhaps you can ask at the official kindle forum at Amazon.
