This sucks, my hubby got me a Kindle dx w/leather case….whispernet is very unrelaible and connections are sparce. Worst $500 spent.

Maggie, it works fine in Europe and Asia. Haven't tried Japan or South America. To use it for email you'd have to use mobile versions of email sites. They work fine though slowly. Try asking at the official Kindle forum - People would have experience of using it in Japan and South America.

I’m looking to get the kindle since I read so much and will be doing A LOT of traveling in the next few months. Has anyone used theirs while traveling internationally? The coverage map says that where I’m going, South America and Japan I’ll have coverage but I would like to see if anyone has had experience traveling with it. I’d also like to use it for email to stay in touch with the family at home… Not sure how reliable it’s going to be though… Any advice?

thanks for the update. A lot of people have been upset that Maine doesn’t have coverage so it’s good to know the WhisperNet coverage is being updated (or perhaps the coverage was always there and just wasn’t accurately reflected).

The coverage map is not too accurate because it shows most of Maine with no coverage but I am getting coverage in Perry, Maine. I was shocked when I tried it and the Kindle showed two & three bars on the wireless. Granted it’s slower than the 3G but I was able to download a book in just a minute. I think Maine is sometimes thought of as a foreign country because we’re mostly rural. Even national weather reports will cut off our part of Maine like we don’t exist!

the Mac is kindle compatible i.e. you can connect it and it will work. Amazon have also said that in a few months you will have Kindle for Mac that lets you read your kindle books on the Mac. More Mac discussion at the Kindle forum.

Bob, there is no way I know of – I would suggest calling Amazon and asking for a feature like parental control. Also, there is a setting in the browser to ‘delete history’ – so there must be some place where the history is saved. I’m in canada and can’t get whispernet so i’m unable to try it out. could you ask your question at the official amazon forum? perhaps even amazon customer service at Inside the United States: 1-866-321-8851 ; Outside the United States: 1-206-266-0927 ..

Is there any way I can check Whispernet stats on my daughter’s kindle? I have parental controls on our computers, but Its difficult to regulate the kindle and I didn’t even know it had real internet capabilities aside from downloading books until a couple weeks ago. Thanks!
