What happen is.... if you do not buy kindle as gift, it automatically register for you.
So you must click "This will be a gift" option right below the "add to cart" link.
For more information, click "Why is this important?" link which located right below the "This will be a gift" link.

It says that "When you check the "this will be a gift" box, Amazon will:
Deliver the Kindle unregistered. The recipient can register the Kindle to their own Amazon account when it arrives.
Ship the Kindle in an unmarked Amazon box that doesn't say Kindle. Kindle is designed to ship in its original container directly to you. Keep Kindle a surprise by marking it as a gift.
Remove prices on the packing slip included with the order."

Now you why it happened that way....
But do not worry. There is a solution to fix this problem.
Just go to www.amazon.com and login to your account. Click "your account" link then find the "Digital Content" then click "manage your kindle" link.
Find the "Your Kindle Account" and click "Manage Your Devices" link . Then you will see pictures of each kindle with its own serial number.
Make sure you find the right kindle with matching serial number, them click the "DEREGISTER" link.
Order to register the device, find the "Your Kindle Account" and click "Register a Kindle" link and follow the steps to register kindle to you.

Oh another tip. if your family member(husband, wife, kids) want to buy kindle in future or want to use Kindle app (another way to enjoy kindle without kindle device but I recommend to purchase kindle device if you are a serious reader) on phone, tablet, or computer, just register them up to 6 devices (amazon has limit to protect the copyright... as far as I understand) on same amazon account to read almost all the books that you purchased within that account.
I think subscriptions can not be shared. They can be read on one device that register to.

More info go to www.amazon.com and read the "Kindle Support" section.

I recently brought a kindle for my Dad, he has registered it a month or so ago. Since then we have been sent another one by mistake, it is assuming it will be registered to him again, as when it is turned on, it welcomes him.

Obviously if I've got a free Kindle here I am going to use it, but I need to register it.
If I was to register this Kindle, would it blacklist my Dads? Or would Amazon assume it is mine, or just not pick it up at all?

yes - you can setup different subscriptions to go to different kindles.
for sharing books - just register up to 6 kindles to one account and download the book to each.
you can do it at the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fdigital%2Ffiona%2Fmanage%3Fie%3DUTF8%26%252AVersion%252A%3D1%26%252Aentries%252A%3D0&tag=thrshoguideaa-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957" rel="nofollow">'Manage Your Kindle' </a>section.

Earl,

I just bought a Kindle and love it. My husband wants one, too. I guess we'll set up the account to download different subscriptions to the different Kindles. Does that sound like a workable strategy? What is the process for sharing books?

***** Correction***** Subscriptions to magazines and newspapers can NOT be shared! They are all associated with a specific Kindle. However, they can be transferred among the 6 registered Kindles on a single account. I have verified this with Kindle support.
