Free Books from Harper Collins Publishing – Browse Inside Free Books

A big thanks to DBA guy for pointing this out so we don’t have to wait till monday – there are three free books available now (and links are in this post itself – hard to miss). Plus preview chapters for a lot of other books.

In an attempt to boost books sales Harper Collins publishing will begin offering electronic editions of some of its books for free ;) They say the electronic book won’t be downloadable to the Kindle – don’t see how they can stop people transferring from their PC to the Kindle though. Also – a new Coelho book free every month – wow. Note that the Dangerous Book for Boys just has a few chapters. The remaining three are free.

Starting Monday, readers who log on to www.harpercollins.com will be able to see the entire contents of “The Witch of Portobello” by Mr. Coelho; “Mission: Cook! My Life, My Recipes and Making the Impossible Easy” by Mr. Irvine; “I Dream in Blue: Life, Death and the New York Giants” by Roger Director; “The Undecided Voter’s Guide to the Next President: Who the Candidates Are, Where They Come from and How You Can Choose” by Mark Halperin; and “Warriors: Into the Wild” the first volume in a children’s series by Erin Hunter.

HarperCollins also plans to upload a different title by Mr. Coelho each month for the rest of the year.

For more than a year, visitors to HarperCollins’ Web site have been able to use the company’s Browse Inside function to look at some pages of most of the publisher’s current titles. Ms. Friedman said she believed that by displaying even more of the book’s content free, more readers would be enticed to buy.

Brian Murray, president of HarperCollins, said that the free electronic editions would be available only for one month, and readers would not be able to download them to laptops or to an electronic reader like Kindle from Amazon.com. The print function will also be disabled, but readers will be able to link to retailers like Amazon.com to buy copies of the books.

  1. I went to HarperCollins’ website…they have a free book posted now (The Undecided Voter’s Guide to the Next President). It opens in a web app…you can’t save it to your PC, so may not be able to xfer to Kindle.

  2. Hello!
I also enjoyed this book a lot!
Have you heard that Paulo is inviting readers to adapt his book to the movie screen?
    It’s really exiting!

Simply fantastic video about the project:

  3. well – what people don’t know is that Harper Collins only launched this free online reading site after the bestselling author Paulo Coelho revealed his pirate coelho blog to the world during the DLD conference in Munich last January.
I read the interveiw he gave for Newsweek and can’t help to join the dots:

I doubt Harper Collins would have made such a move without this author’s pressure.
    Thumbs up for Pirate Coelho!
