A work around for the subscription blog thing would be to simply be able to update the Kindle via a hardwired or wifi internet connection that doesn’t rely on Amazons system?

Since Kindle owners don’t have to pay a monthly connection/service fee on this, Amazon is forced to meter it instead. I’m sure Sprint isn’t doing this out of the kindness of their heart, so an all-you-can-eat subscription model would probably be a tough sell for everyone but customers like you and I!
