I’ve spent considerable time in the last few weeks looking at web directories and doing submissions (not for this site – for another site i own that i actually have ownership of). And i really think there is a huge huge opportunity for a big directory to come up. You currently have three really big popular well respected directories i.e.
- Open Directory – www.dmoz.org . This is a free directory and has arguably the best ILQ (incoming link quality) of any directory. However, it takes forever to accept submissions.
- Yahoo – dir.yahoo.com. It charges $299 per year per submission. This has the second best ILQ score amongst directories.
- The third strongest directory is probably http://www.business.com/ which costs $199 per year. This has a pretty good ILQ score.
- After that we have some very good directories like www.lii.org, starting point, best of the web etc. However the top 2 of Yahoo and Dmoz dominate for all practical purposes.
Where i think the really big opportunity lies is to create a wikipedia for webpages i.e. where should i surf? what are the best sites for shopping? for news? and so forth.
Arguably, stumbleupon is something like this. However there is a lot of value in having an actual directory with great classifications and with editors (and not just public opinion) deciding what gets priority and what gets included.
The pay-off is huge i.e. with Yahoo charging 299$ per year, Business.com charging 199$ per year, someone coming up with a great directory with a mix of free and paid submissions and quick reviews (at the most 1 week to accept or reject a website application) could truly make a killing and provide a great service at the same time.
