A perfect example of why giving away a book free works

R. W. Ridley is having a Free Kindle contest. Basically, his book ‘The Takers’ is free, and you have to answer one question based on reading the book and you can enter a contest to win the kindle.

I was waiting for a game called Fallout 3 to install (its the only big ticket video game I’ve allowed myself this whole year (since time is scarce) + a game that I’ve been waiting for, for years (as have others – it’s shipped 4.7 million copies in its first week – $300 million dollars worth)).

Well – I started reading a few pages of R. W. Ridley’s ‘The Takers’ thinking maybe the answer to the contest question is in the first few pages. And I was hooked – it’s a great book. It’s free – go ahead and read it. However, be warned.

Once I started I couldn’t stop – Around 1:30 am is when I started, and reading a PDF on a PC is painful and slow – however, it’s 4:29 am and I’ve finished the book, already searched for the sequel and am wondering whether to wait for my Kindle to arrive and get part 2 on it (another thing the kindle reader is great for – instant gratification), or buy the book from Amazon Canada.

At 1:28 am today I had no idea who R. W. Ridley was (apart from the fact that he was giving away a Kindle), and at 4:30 am I’m 99% sure I’m going to end up reading all of the Oz chronicles. Yes, it helped that it was a really good book. However, this whole ‘giving away one book free to get people hooked’ thing really, really works.

The contest goes on till December. The book is really worth it. Even without the free kindle contest.

  1. I can’t thank you enough for the review and post about the contest. Very cool.

  2. I clicked on the link and am totally sucked into this book! It’s amazing to me how the Internet (and the Kindle) are changing the publishing industry.

I probably would never have found this book without either of them.

Let me say again, the book is great!

  3. @debby – glad you feel the same way.
