10,000 Kindle New York Times Subscriptions

Zach at NiemanLab got hold of an internal NYTimes memo (Edit: JohnH also blogged about these kindle figures at their blog). And the biggest scoop is the NYTImes has 10,000 subscribers on the Kindle. And their blogs have 2,000 subscribers. They say that their Nov 2nd to 5th free newspaper promotion really helped, and that they’re planning a similar promotion around the Presidential Inauguration.

Edit: If this shows up on another site in 10 minutes without a mention and a link – then somebody gonna get hurt real bad ;) .

Here’s the snippet (actually, the whole section) on the Kindle, and in typical ‘newspapers are dinosaurs’ style they have it hidden away deep in the ‘Also Of Interest’ section. Sam Zell thinks Kindle might be the future of newspapers, and NY Times is more interested by new zip codes being opened for home delivery.

During Election week, Marketing and Circulation collaborated with Amazon.com to drive monthly subscriptions and single-copy sales through a special “sampling” offer to users of Kindle, Amazon’s wireless reading device. All Kindle users had free access to New York Times content November 2–5. We supported this initiative through print and online ads, public relations and buzz marketing. As a result of this effort, 8,500 sample copies of The New York Times were downloaded to Kindle readers who do not subscribe to The Times on their device. This allowed us to introduce readers to The Times on Kindle reading experience. We now have more than 10,000 paid subscribers to The Times on Kindle as well as more than 2,000 subscribers to the various NYTimes blogs available via the device. We are considering a similar promotion around the inauguration in January.

There you have it – actual news. Not hand waving.

Also, using a simple subscriptions to reviews ratio, I’ve updated my Kindle Newspapers list post with approximate newspaper subscription figures.
