The lack of color options and plain design of the Kindle can be easily overcome with a few touches. Here are some of the personalization and design upgrade options that can help you pretty up your kindle reader -
Kindle Skins
- iStyles make great Kindle skins- These offer both personalization and protection. Also, each skin comes with a free download of a screensaver that matches the skin – this creates some really pretty designs. Also be careful to get a design that doesn’t distract you from reading – this kindle skins discussion at the Amazon forums has details. At Amazon a company called MyGift sells iStyles skins like this one (and there are nearly a hundred to choose from) -
- Use Tego to custom make a skin for the Kindle – You can choose to design one side or both sides and shipping is pretty cheap – you can use your own images which is really cool.
There are some other companies like Kroo and Zagg that make kindle covers – however these have rather poor ratings so I’ve left them out. Between the 100 or so MyGift/ iStyles Kindle Skins and Tego’s design your own – you should have enough options.
Kindle Covers
I’ve written a whole article on what I think are the best kindle covers. These really help to add character to the Kindle. Another interesting option is the M Edge Kindle Jacket which lies somewhere between being a cover and a skin.
Kindle Screensavers
In addition to the Kindle Supplied ScreenSaver images you can use your own images. JacksonUnit? has a page up with great directions on how to use your own images as Kindle ScreenSavers. If you want to convert images to be better suited to the Kindle, use Alex Yatskov’s software, Mangle.
Let me know of ways that you’ve personalized your Kindle, and I’ll add them in.

Thanks! I just got a Kindle and have been wondering what skin/case to get for it.
