Kindle 2 Accessories – some Thoughts

You can go the Kindle 2 Cover post if you’re simply looking to choose a cover. This post discusses improvements that Amazon should consider making to their Kindle 2 Accessories Store.

The range of accessories for the Kindle at the Kindle Store was rather limited. With Kindle 2, Amazon seems to be making a positive change with 35 Kindle 2 accessories already available. Here are some of my thoughts around what improvements Amazon ought to consider  -

  1. A Wider Range of Kindle 2 Covers- Although there is a wide range of covers they are clustered around two price points i.e. $30-$40, and $100-$120. It’d be good to have some simple effective coloured covers at very low prices and also some intermediately priced covers around the $50-$60 mark. Also, it’d be nice to get more companies covered like WaterField Designs.
  2. Kindle 2 Decal Skins- For Kindle 1, there were a range of decal skins available, but not in the Kindle Store. MyGift sold iStyles skins like the one below (and there are nearly a hundred to choose from). The downside was that these were not in the Kindle Accessories section of the Kindle Store – It’d be cool if the Kindle 2 Accessories section expanded to encompass these and similar skins.

  3. More Kindle 2 Screen Protectors – There are currently 3 Kindle Screen Protectors, and these do look good. It’d be nice to have some very simple plastic screen protectors for just a couple dollars each, and also get a wider range of screen protector designs, with an option for uploading images to create custom screen protectors.

  4. At least 5-10 different Kindle 2 Reading Lights. There’s a grand total of 1 reading light currently. I’d definitely like to see the M-Edge eIlluminator (it is good to see that the M-Edge cover range has been added).
  5. All Accessories under the Kindle Store category- Currently some accessories fall under electronics and some (like Kindle 2 Cole Haan covers) fall under Shoes and it’s all confusing navigating through the various accessories.
  6. Let Etsy artists make custom made Kindle 2 covers – A good example are Strangedog.com’s hand made kindle covers.

  7. Custom Made Skins- Allow a company like Tego to custom make skins for the Kindle. There has to be some way of letting people buy the service from Amazon and then designing the skin at Tego or something similar.
  8. ScreenSaver Packs- A custom pack of Kindle 2 Screensavers for a reasonable amount. Perhaps a package of 200 screensavers specially formatted for the Kindle 2 for $2.

Its really good to see the Kindle 2 Accessories store already being better than the Kindle 1 one, and it bodes well for a future that has a Kindle Store that really lets you personalize and spice up your Kindle 2.0.

  1. The Gelaskins protectors aren’t screen covers. Look at the picture of the cover on this page. Notice the two white rectangles at the bottom? This is a skin to cover the _back_ of the Kindle 2, not the front.

I emailed Gelaskins customer support asking about the availability of other designs for the protector and about screen protectors. The representative who replied said that the three skins that Amazon offered were a custom run for Amazon.com, that Amazon was planning on releasing more skin designs, and that they would be looking at offering the skins on their own site in the next six months or so.
