Kindle 2 and Kindle related news this week includes -
- Jesse Vincent just got himself and Amazon into a lot of trouble by writing Savory, a native Kindle application that lets you read ePub and PDF files straight on the Kindle 2.
- Verizon Wireless continues its efforts to enable Kindle competitors to use the Verizon network to provide WhisperNet like service. 5 companies have approached Verizon about this -
Lewis wouldn’t say which manufacturers Verizon has been talking to. But he hinted that they are looking at entering parts of the e-book market that the Kindle doesn’t focus on, like college textbooks.
Verizon also said specifically that they’d love to help Sony.
- AT&T is also getting interested with Glenn Lurie, head of emerging devices at AT&T, saying that the Kindle has done a “phenomenal job” and AT&T wants to be part of that market. Additionally -
AT&T Inc. has also been talking to e-reader manufacturers, said Ralph de la Vega, the company’s head of consumer services. Since AT&T’s network is more similar to ones used overseas, it could support international e-book readers, he noted.
AT&T already subsidizes $400 netbooks, selling them at $50-$99 if you sign a 2 year AT&T subscription. Kindle 2/Kindle come with free Internet access.
- Amazon gets a new VP of Kindle Content – David Naggar. Naggar was president of audio at Random House and, before that, director of sales at Random House.
- Tom Gorman is in the middle of writing The Complete Idiot’s Guide to the Financial Crisis and you can get the first chapter How We Got Here. Its good to know there’s at least one person in the entire world who has any idea what’s going on.
- The success of eReaders is giving LCD manufacturers hope in the midst of struggling TV and PC sales. EInk screens use the same manufacturing facilities as LCDs so it’s relatively easy for LCD manufacturers to try out their own attempts at ePaper.
- Lots of articles hailing the iPhone 3.0 OS, with its support for subscriptions and follow-on purchases, as the savior of the publishing industry. This article in particular is especially pro-Apple as it hands Apple the victor’s crown even before the wars have fully started.
My money’s on Amazon and the Kindle.
