Kindle DX and Kindle threads

Lots and lots of interesting Kindle, DX related news and threads -

  1. Kindle Publishing for Blogs has bloggers all atwitter.
  2. Concerns that there doesn’t seem to be any safety check on whether you actually own the blog you publish. 35% of $1-$2 a month – what an incentive to steal and commit fraud.
  3. The White House blog (not THAT one) laments the spread of the Kindle as it threatens physical books. And ends with -

Even more concerning, why do I want a Kindle??

  4. An eReader named Cool-er is going to get launched in June. $250. Comes in 8 colors. Cool-er details at their website.

Cool-er Reader. So Cool they had to put it in the name.

  5. Nuance (formerly Dragon Naturally Speaking; currently and formerly makers of speech recognition software; behind Kindle Read To Me technology) released a new document scanning and conversion software that has a ‘scan to Kindle’ feature with

documents automatically re-formatted specifically for easy reading and navigating using the Kindle 2 form-factor.

  6. Publishers Weekly getting a little bit antsy about Amazon dipping its toes into old-school publishing. Basically Amazon launched a publishing banner AmazonEncore and acquired worldwide English rights for a self-published book called Legacy.
  7. Kindle DX review posts wondering whether sales are good.

My Take: Not having a Kindle DX release date makes the whole pre-order idea a bit strange. It does, however, help Amazon get an idea of demand and finalize how many to make in the first batch.

  8. Darden and Princeton (Mr. Bezos’ alma mater) can’t stop talking about how committed they are to environmental sustainability and how their Kindle DX trials are all about sustainability.
  9. University of Washington finally realizes that Amazon is in Seattle and joins the ’review Kindle DX for students’ trials (props to them for mentioning convenience for students as the biggest potential benefit).
  10. Rumors that Sony intends on releasing its own large screen Reader before holiday season. Also, that Barnes & Noble might use FoxIt’s eSlick to take on the Kindle.
  11. Was talking to a lawyer tuesday and couldn’t stop thinking how the 3rd or 4th generation of the Kindle will almost certainly be a dream gadget for lawyers.
  12. TTS/ Read To Me kill switch now added and books with TTS disabled will slowly start showing up.
  13. And finally, Sony reported a $1.72 billion loss in Q1, 2009.
