Phosphor make eInk watches, and with two new additions, they now have a rather interesting range of eInk watches available.
Here’s a quick video –
The big selling points seem to be -
- That the eInk dial will stand out (Phosphor makes sure they drill this into our heads by mentioning it innumerable times).
- Switching between black on white and white on black. This is pretty good as it allows switching the look of the watch to match what you’re wearing.
- The contrast and larger digits allowing people with weak eyesight to still use the watch.
- The newness of the technology.
There are three lines of Phosphor’s eInk watches -
I. Digital Hour Clock
- This comes with ‘standard numeric digital display in one mode, a graphic hour clock display in another’.
- The design is passable – doesn’t really excite me – however the big digits would be great for low vision people, and would also help people who need high contrast.
- You can get the watch with a stainless steel, black plastic or black polyurethane band.
- Priced between $175-$195.
- In addition -
•Display: 12 hour only, autonomously alternating between white-on-black to black-on-white time displays each passing minute.
•Case width: 38.0mm
•Ultra thin thickness: 8.0mm
•Water resistance: 5 ATM – 50m
Here’s what it looks like -
II. Digital Calendar Clock
- I might be mistaken – however, it seems to just show the date, day and hour.
- It has the same specifications as the previous watch (same thickness, same case width).
- Don’t like the design much. Its also cluttered because it literally has a monthly calendar on its dial.
- Retails between $195 and $225.
III. Eink Ana-Digi Watch
- This is my favorite. Its a rather good looking design.
- The ability to change the design gives it a lot of flexibility. The video above and the demo on the Phosphor website both clearly show this.
- Its round dial gives it a better look and its more akin to a traditional well-designed watch.
- The photo-luminescent hands are a great touch.
- Specifications -
Available in three styles with photo-luminescent hands: a stainless steel, metal band, a cross-stitched, elegant black leather band, or a sporty, black polyurethane band.
•Display: 12 hour only
•Case width: 45.0mm
•Case thickness: 13.0mm
•Water resistance: 5 ATM – 50m
•Photoluminescent Hands - Price is between $185 and $195. If I didn’t love my current watch so much I’d consider buying this.
My take on the Phosphor eInk Watches
Its a great idea. It also hints at amazingly adaptable watches once color eInk is available. You’d literally be able to change your watch design to match your mood or your clothes.
My dad prefers large clear digits and he’d probably like the first watch – Thats the one that I feel meets a market need best. The last watch is the one that has the most scope as a general purpose watch and might also see a lot of demand.
Not too excited about the price since I’ve never heard of Phosphor before and a small watch sized eInk screen shouldn’t be too expensive.
