Kindle DX sold out for 4-6 weeks

Noticed that the Kindle 2 product page no longer links to the Kindle DX page. Probably because the Kindle DX is sold out for 4-6 weeks.

Amazon say  -

Expected to ship in 4 to 6 weeks.

Due to heavy customer demand, Kindle DX is sold out. Please ORDER KINDLE NOW to reserve your place in line.

What’s going on with the Kindle DX?

There are just 179 kindle dx reviews up at Amazon so it’s obviously not selling more than the Kindle 2 was at its launch. How has it still sold out?

This is very reminiscent of the Kindle 1 release. After that experience and the sold out fiasco during last year’s christmas season you’d think that Amazon would be able to anticipate and meet demand better.

Update: A few days ago at the official kindle forum there was talk that a few members saw ‘Kindle DX sold out for 4-6 weeks’ and then saw that changed to ‘In Stock June 26th’. So it seems that demand has gradually exceeded supply.

  1. I would guess that some number of the KDXs are going to educational institutions on their pilot program. That may be a drain on the inventory.
