The official Amazon Kindle Blog have two Kindle book deals (only till the 5th of July) -
- The American Patriot’s Almanac is at $9.99 (apparently the list price of $32 means $9.99 is a deal). Actually it’s hit #75 and it’s rated 5 stars so it probably is good value for money. The author -
Dr. William J. Bennett is a best-selling author, educator, and speaker. Host of the top-ten nationally syndicated radio show Bill Bennett’s Morning in America, he is also the Washington Fellow of the Claremont Institute. Serving as secretary of education and chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities under President Reagan and director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy under President Bush, today Bennett is a regular contributor to CNN and has contributed to America’s leading newspapers, magazines, and television shows.
- Boomtown: Chang’s Famous Fireworks is at $4.99 although it’s rated just 3.5 stars.
- Update: New $1.99 romance novel deal – Seducing a Scottish Bride by Sue-Ellen Welfonder.
To be fair to Amazon they have 3 free books and a $1 book offer in July already. Throwing in a couple not-so-exciting deals isn’t too bad – plus it might be an indicator that the ‘BigDeals on Kindle’ section might evolve into something of an actual deals section (as opposed to its current status as the place where you can find 5 free book offers every month).
Bestseller List prices succumbing to Gravity
There’s some interesting playing around with prices going around in the bestseller list -
- Catastrophe changed from $9.99+ to $9.99.
- Loving a Lost Lord (had told you about it being free yesterday) is now $4.76. This sort of ‘2 days free’ to get a high sales rank trickery shouldn’t be allowed.
- 6 books over $9.99 in the Top 100.
- A lot of authors are trying sub $9.99 prices which is a good trend.
Kudos to the following authors for trying out sub $9.99 prices -
- Charlaine Harris (on most of her books).
- Oliver Sacks.
- Malcolm Gladwell.
- William P. Young.
- Mary Ann Shaffer.
- Elizabeth Strout.
- Jodi Picoult.
- Stieg Larsson.
- Markus Zusak.
- Julia Quinn.
- Tatiana de Rosnay.
- Susan Mallery.
- And a few more.
Intelligent Marketing in the Kindle Store seems to be $5-$8 for published authors and $1-$2 for self-published authors. Competition is driving prices lower.

Hi,
Just for information. The Sue-Ellen Welfonder book mentioned above is part of the Warner Forever $1.99 Summer Reads for July. There are four other books for July at the same price:
Love Is in the Heir by Kathryn Caskie
Knight of Desire by Margaret Mallory
One Scream Away by Kate Brady
Border Moonlight by Amanda Scott
Additionally, there will be another (different) set offered for the month of August for $1.99.
thanks for the information Anika.
No problem. I really enjoy your blog.
BTW, have you noticed that Amazon has been removing the 20% discount usually applied to the kindle books. I noticed a customer discussion by one of the indie authors mentioning this as well. However, I had noticed this occurence with the ePublishers, since books I largely purchase are from the small presses. For an example, check out the kindle books offered by Lethe Press, Ravenous Romance, Liquid Silver Books, and Dreamspinner Press. I tried asking customer service (via email) about this new pattern without receiving a satisfactory response.
I don’t get why you credit authors with lowering Kindle ebook prices. Amazon sets the prices itself and my understanding is even amongst publishers, who set list prices and discounts for retailers, authors have very little say.
i credit authors because soon publishers and middlemen will have little power.
authors don’t yet realize the power the kindle store and other ebook outlets are giving them.
