Current Used Kindle 2 Status: The $119 Used Kindle 2 is In Stock. The $139 Used Kindle 2 US is Out of Stock.
Used Kindle 2 Stock Last Updated: 2:45 pm on November 26th, 2010.

Will keep this page updated on whether the $169 used Kindle 2 is out of stock or in stock.

In a ‘blink and you miss it’ moment today, a used Kindle 2 (refurbished by Amazon and sold via their Warehouse Deals section) appeared briefly for $189 and then went out of stock. Now its back again at $219.

When there’s stock the default Kindle 2 page should show you the $189 used Kindle 2 option.

  1. There’s no way to link to the warehouse deals page as it takes you to the Kindle 2 product page.
  2. Searching for ‘used kindle’ in the Kindle Store brings up the link to the page which says the $189 Kindle 2 is out of stock.

Did Amazon introduce the $219 Used Kindle 2 to fight Sony’s $199 Pocket Edition?

Yes. Sony had introduced the $199 Pocket Edition and claimed the price would be a big factor.

When you look at what Amazon has done today i.e.

  1. $219 Used Kindle 2 (refurbished by Amazon).
  2. Refurbished Kindle 1 price dropped from $199 to $149.

It does seem that Sony were right about price.

Amazon must have felt (or seen statistics that indicate) that the $199 price point is important to customers.

By introducing a $219 used Kindle 2 and dropping the price of the used Kindle 1 to $149, Amazon have stolen and used Sony’s pricing strategy against them.

Comparing a refurbished, used kindle 2 with the Sony pocket edition becomes rather interesting.

Used Kindle 2 Vs Sony Pocket Edition

Some of the Areas in which the Used Kindle 2 wins -

  1. Bigger Screen (6″ compared to 5″).
  2. Wider range of new books.
  3. Free Internet and 60 second downloads.
  4. Better usability.

Some of the Areas in which the Sony Pocket Edition wins -

  1. Better Screen Contrast.
  2. Cheaper Price (by $20).
  3. It’s New.
  4. Library Finder for free ebooks from the library.
  5. ePub and PDF support.
  6. Lots of free Google ebooks (although these can be converted for Kindle).

Overall, the used Kindle 2 wins as you get free WhisperNet and Internet access and a bigger screen.

Could a cut in the prices of the Kindle 2 and Kindle DX be next?

Kindle 2 price cut is unlikely as the refurbished Kindle 2 addresses that.

A price cut for the Kindle DX could definitely be around the corner. The Kindle DX is pretty expensive to begin with, and indications are that sales haven’t been close to the rate of the Kindle 2 (rate at which reviews are being added is slower).
