This post covers international kindle newspapers. For US Kindle newspapers check out my kindle newspaper reviews post.
Kindle Newspapers in UK
For some strange reason The Economist shows up under UK newspapers – we’ll disregard it, leaving us with 4 UK Kindle newspapers.
- The Times – Its rated 3.5 stars across 5 reviews. It’s $9.99 per month. A few problems with formatting so trying the 14 day trial or buying a single issue first is recommended.
- Daily Mail – Its rated 3 stars across 2 reviews and costs $9.99 a month. One 5 star review and one 1 star review – take your pick.
- The Independent – Rated 4.5 stars across 3 reviews and costs a whopping $14.99 per month. The Sunday Edition gets a lot of love (with a recommendation to buy it later in the day to avoid getting the Saturday version by mistake).
- The Daily Telegraph – No reviews yet and costs $9.99 a month.
Kindle in Spain – Spanish Newspapers
There are 3 Spanish newspapers available on the Kindle -
- El Pais is available for $14.99 a month and has no reviews yet.
- Diariocritico is rated 5 stars on a solitary review and is for $9.99 a month. The lone review says this paper offers breaking news from the Valencian community.
- AS is $14.99 a month and not yet rated. The Real Madrid Vs Barcelona cover ensures they get the picture reference -
It seems that the lack of Spanish language books in the Kindle Store has meant not much of an audience for Spanish language newspapers.
As a comparison -
- El Pais is the best selling Spanish Kindle newspaper and its Sales Rank is just 15,520.
- The Times is the best selling UK Kindle newspaper and its Sales Rank is around 1,200.
Kindle in Italy – Italian Newspapers
Two Italian newspapers grace the Kindle Store -
- La Stampa is for $9.99 a month and has no reviews. The kindle sales rank is rather low.
- Corriere Della Sera is also for $9.99 and has a whopping 7 reviews that rate it 3.5 stars. Apparently it’s the newspaper all true Milanesi read. Do read the reviews as they have a variety of things to keep in mind.
German Kindle Newspapers
There are two Kindle newspapers for Germany -
- Frankfurter Allgemeine which, despite the $14.99 price, has a 4 star rating across 11 reviews and a 5,241 sales rank (good, not great).
- Handelsblatt – $14.99 a month and no reviews.
One of the reviewers of the Frankfurter Allgemeine makes a really good point i.e.
Newspapers on paper from overseas are very expensive due to shipping costs, and they always arrive with some delay.
The Kindle edition will allow me to pay for the content, rather than for the material and the shipping, AND read the magazines or newspapers when they appear.
If you think about the fact that you can get any country’s newspapers, even regional ones, delivered to you anywhere in the world – that’s just amazing. Of course, there is a ton of expansion of Kindle newspapers still needed.
French Kindle Newspapers
Two French newspapers -
- Le Monde which costs $14.99 and is rated just 2.5 stars. A lot of people complaining about the price.
- Les Echos which also costs $14.99 and is rated a high 4.5 stars. The reviews say Les Echos specializes in economic and financial news with French and International news also included.
International Kindle Newspapers
There are two newspapers that cover international news in general -
- The International Herald Tribune which gets 4 stars across 19 customer reviews (12 are 5 stars). It costs $9.99 a month. It certainly seems that this is the best newspaper in the Kindle Store for international news. Note that a few reviews mention overlaps with the NY Times so if you already get NYT get a trial or a single issue first.
- The International Herald Tribune – Asia Edition. No reviews and $9.99 a month for a subscription.
Chinese Kindle Newspapers
A solitary newspaper, Shanghai Daily, represents China in the Kindle Store. It’s just $5.99 a month and is rated 3 stars across 8 customer reviews. It has a pretty high sales rank i.e. 3,441.
The reviews are quite clear that this is a great way to get insight into the official policy and political worldview of China. Note that the news covers China and adds some International coverage - there is not really much Asian news.
Kindle Brazil – Brazilian Newspaper
O Globo is the solitary newspaper in Brazilian Portuguese. Its rated 3.5 stars across 3 reviews and costs $9.99 a month.
Kindle Ireland – Irish Newspapers
The Irish Times is the solitary Irish Kindle newspaper. It does have great reviews (people even mention it in other newspaper reviews as being great) and is rated 4 stars across 4 customer reviews (everyone loves it). Its priced a very reasonable $5.99 per month.
This is the newspaper I’d get if WhisperNet came to Canada (perhaps WSJ too).
Kindle in Mexico
Just a single newspaper, El Universal, and just one review for it (in Spanish) which gives it 5 stars. Let us know if you like it.
Kindle in Japan
A solitary newspaper, The Mainichi Daily News, with zero reviews.
Closing Thoughts on International Kindle Newspapers
Now that the Kindle has expanded to 175 countries it’s time for Amazon to expand the number of newspapers available.
- Wonder what newspaper delivery will cost internationally and whether prices will include delivery.
- If delivering a book adds $2 to the price it’s scary to speculate on what newspaper subscriptions might cost outside the US.
On the other hand, if Amazon do mean to focus only on English speaking customers, we probably will see very few international newspapers added. Which would be a pity.

Why is it strange that The Economist shows up under UK newspapers? It’s published out of London, and is registered in the UK as a weekly newspaper (although it is more of a magazine format).
It bills itself as a weekly newspaper. Newspaper = daily.
Also, it appears in the Kindle Magazines section.
