Various Threads on MobileRead point us to 3 kindle free books (and to 5 free short stories) and a buy one get on free offer found at Books on the Knob -
- A Thriller, Unbreakable by Sydney Somers is $0 at the Kindle Store.
- Buy Eating the Dinosaur by Chuck Klosterman and get Killing Yourself to Live free. Offer lasts until December 31st, 2009.
Update: Its difficult to get the next two books (haven’t been able to get it to work and other people are having problems too). So you might just want to skip eHarlequin’s jump through a 100 hoops free books offers.
- BoneYard by Michelle Gagnon. It’s a Thriller and it’s free from eHarlequin. Please Choose the MobiPocket eBook format. At the Kindle Store its $5 and rated 4.5 stars.
- The Hunters by Jason Pinter. Also fee from eHarlequin. Some strange ‘buy now, download on Nov 1st’ restriction.
The eHarlequin store was having some problems so don’t panic if it doesn’t work for you at first that apparently are permanent issues.
Also worth considering -
- The Complete Oscar Wilde Collection (95 titles) for $1.
- Sustainable Energy – without the hot air by David MacKay. Free PDF for Kindle DX.
- Some 1 cent short stories in the Kindle Store, including A Finnish Fairy Tale by Aaron Shepard.
The Race to Zero Amongst Self Published Books and Compilations
It’s quite interesting to see a few changes with time -
- Public Domain Titles from publishers are getting cheaper and cheaper. Perhaps aided by Amazon’s addition of free public domain titles.
- Independent Authors are pricing their books cheaper – including 1 cent.
- A lot of compilations of 50 books from an author and so forth used to be $2, $3 or more. They all now seem to be at $1.
This means nothing as far as book prices for new books are concerned. However, its interesting to see the prices of compilations, formatted public domain books, and independent author titles all tend to $1 (or less).

For Boneyard, the description says:
Mobipocket eBook
Protected content: Mobipocket “PID” required to open the eBook
Device Restrictions: Usable on up to 3 supported devices (PC or PDA)
I have the PID for my Kindle from Mobipocket 6.0. How do I use the PID with Calibre?
Hmm. I found that you need to register your PID with eHarleequin before you can download the book. I did that, but once I transferred it to my Kindle, I got the error message on my Kindle:
“The seelected item could nott be opened because it is not authorized for this Kindle. If you would like to read this item on your Kindle, pleaser purchase a copy from the Kindle Store.”
I guess I did something wrong.
yes, its a bit of a pain. The site isn’t working for me so can’t confirm things for you.
