Kindle 3, Worst Week to Buy a Kindle

There’s a rather cryptic/interesting comment from Jake A. who claims to know about the Kindle 3 release date (my stance is obviously in favor of what he’s saying) -

Switch11 is right. Kindle 3 will come out in November.

I know it isn’t too creditable coming from a random poster on the internet so don’t believe me if you don’t want to.

But I do have inside information (from a family member who works for Amazon) that it is scheduled for a release in the first or second week of november as long as production estimates continue on pace.

Supposedly, Amazon has been planning on a release all along in November. They bumped up production awhile ago after hearing of the new Sony Daily Reader coming out for the holiday season. Amazon has been ahead of everyone with their eReaders up to now. Don’t think they have fallen behind now.

I suspect leaks / rumors will begin to float around in a few days. Anyway, you don’t have to take me at my word, but maybe you should at least reconsider waiting a week or two before buying a Nook or Kindle.

Regards,

Jake A.

He actually does have a great point about waiting before buying a Kindle or Nook (even if Kindle 3 release is not in November).

Here’s Why -

Nov 1st to Dec 31st purchases can be returned until Jan 31, 2010

Check out the Amazon Page on Holiday Returns Policy -

We understand that many customers like to order holiday gifts early, so we have extended our returns period for the holidays.

Items sold by Amazon.com and shipped between November 1 and December 31, 2009, may be returned until January 31, 2010 for a full refund, subject to our other return guidelines listed below.

In 5 days, Amazon’s Holiday Period starts – which means delaying until November 1st makes perfect sense.

Last year, Amazon had a kindle coupon from October 24th through Nov 1st. That was to go with Oprah Kindle.

This year there’s a $20 price cut. Perhaps a Kindle Coupon might get thrown in – though it’s unlikely.

In Conclusion – Kindle 3 may or may not release in November 2009.

Wait to buy an eReader for a week anyways. November 1st onwards – you’re safe for 3 months.

Amazon’s Kindle 3 for US, Kindle 2 for the world policy

Amazon’s Kindle strategy will be -

  1. Amazon will have a Kindle International that it ships worldwide. This is the new consolidated Kindle 2.
  2. For the US, the level of competition will force it to release a Kindle 3. Perhaps they planned a 2 year anniversary release anyways.

The competition is stronger -

  1. The Nook ties the Kindle 2 (although every day its value keeps going down as you hear that publishers are turning off LendMe for their books).
  2. Sony Reader Daily Edition will have Library Finder and wireless downloads.

Plus the competition has the advantage of retail outlets. There’s no way Amazon messes up two holiday seasons in a row.

Kindle 3 is around the corner – and you heard it here first.

  1. This seems like a great way to really annoy international customers who have only had their 2′s for one week! For that reason alone surely they’ll have to settle for a revamped DX and avoid anything called “Kindle 3″ until Nov next year?

  2. Quite frankly, the US market is worth more.

The Nook isn’t available internationally. Sony aren’t going to release Wireless downloads and Daily Edition outside of the US.

Amazon can’t afford to lose the #1 spot in the US just to make sure international cutomers don’t get upset.

  3. If the Kindle 3 is about to be released shortly, why didn’t Amazon just wait to offer Kindle 3 to both US and international customers instead of the Kindle 2? Would have saved upsetting anyone.

    • I couldnt agree more! I’m so annoyed even now and I havent even bought one yet!

I live in Japan but am British- I love reading but I hate the expense of shipping books in and out of Japan-
I was one click away from the buying the Kindle 2 when I suddenly remembered how I got scorched here two years ago when the iPhone finally made it to Japan. Unknown to me Id just signed up to the competition 2 days earlier! So with Kindle I checked out the possibility of Kindle 3 appearing in November and have deferred my purchase.
However, now people say the K2 will be the international version and the K3 US only!!!! What?! that’s just soooooo rude!
Its us expats/travellers who most want to read the blasted newspapers as we cant just pop down to the newsagents for our favourite dailys!!!

As you said, what was the point of launching K2 int version only to make it outmoded in a matter of months?!

  4. It’ll be a US only release. Look at what every other company is doing. Focusing on the US.

Put aside whatever – it’s not fair feeling you have and consider the fact that a UK newspaper assumed UK has had something like 80K sales of the Sony Reader in UK so far.

For Kindles and Sony’s total it’s nearly 2 -2.5 million, mostly in the US.

You have to go where the market is.

  5. Also, my personal opinion and the comment on the blog are hinting at a kindle 3 release in november.

    I might be wrong.

  6. Since when is selling an item only in the US more lucrative than selling it worldwide? I guess the wish is father to the thought here.

  7. This would be a huge mistake on Amazon’s part. I really doubt they will release a US only Kindle 3, certainly not in November. Think about it: we haven’t heard any real leaks or seen any photos. What technology can they introduce this year that would make it worth buying over the Kindle 2? Color, nope. Flexible screen? Probably not.

As much as you want the Kindle 3 to appear this year you’ve never told us what the magical selling point of this device would be…

I think Amazon will be creating Kindles that can work in all markets from now on, doing otherwise would be a pretty big headache in terms of hardware.

archerknewsmit and AP are right, releasing a Kindle 3 this year, less than a year after Kindle 2 appeared and less than a month after Kindle 2 International just doesn’t make any sense.

    Time will tell….

    • Amazon is advertising the Kindle 2 on TV tonight (November 5, 2009). I don’t see why they would do TV advertising if the K2 is going to be replaced before the holiday season. I suspect we are looking at February or March for the K3 to be released.

The trouble for Amazon is that if they don’t have the K3 out for Christmas, they are going to fall behind the Nook and Sony Daily Reader, both of which will be in stores by the end of the month. Both of those ereaders have nice features and are likely to be big hits this year.

  9. So much for the “scheduled for a release in the first or second week of november ” — it’s now midway through 2nd week of Nov, and still not even a leak or hint of K3.

  10. Folks … it’s NOV 23rd today and where is K3?
