Cool eReader Design Ideas

Here are some cool ereader design ideas -

First up, there was a Design Challenge – Future of Reading, organized by Core 77 Magazine. There were some interesting ideas and here are 2 of them -

Two great eReader design ideas

Projected Books - One from the booklight, one onto the wall

 BookLight by Kicker Studios

The content stays in the BookLight and is projected onto any book or any other surface.

The Booklight lets the user select the size, heft, and feel of the surface they want to read on, giving back the tactility of the bound book many have grown to love.

The beauty of this design is -

  1. The BookLight is super small and very convenient.
  2. You can select what size screen to project it onto.
  3. It allows for multiple people to read.

SuperFlyer 5000 by Hot Potato

A great idea at the heart of it i.e.

bringing reading back into the media room so people can spend time together…with books.

This concept reconsiders the entire reading gesture, going from hand-held/one foot away, to hands-free/10 feet away.

It’s an interesting idea.

Quick Note on Projectors in Mobile Devices

Digitimes have talked about how Pico projectors shipments are set to explode from a few hundred thousand in 2009 to over a million in 2010.

  1. Taiwan based Young Optics think there will be over 10 million pico projectors shipping by 2012.
  2. If pico projectors can be used in phones, then why not in eReaders.

The BookLight and the SuperFlyer are both projector based designs and they maintain portability while providing large reading areas and flexibility.

Stealing a Laptop Design Idea

This is a laptop concept design eReader companies ought to steal –

  1. eInk have already said they’re close to having flexible screens done.
  2. Plastic Logic have flexible screens done.
  3. The idea to have half the screen double up as a touch keyboard is great. Asus have mentioned something similar for their netbook/ereader.
  4. The option to choose between a larger tablet and a smaller keyboard and screen is great too.
  5. The pop-up stand is something every eReader needs to add, along with auto-scroll, for hands free reading.

Hopefully we keep seeing cool eReader design ideas and some of them make it into actual ereaders.
