Two different companies have worked around the Kindle’s limitations (to a certain extent) and figured out how to get us a working Kindle Sudoku.
Mobi Sudoku by Mobile Reference
Published: October 28th, 2009.
The first volume is 1 cent and there are 8-9 more volumes, each for $1.
Each Sudoku volume contains 20 puzzles – 5 each of Easy, Moderate, Difficult, and Expert levels.
Here’s how it works -
- Buy and open the Sudoku Book.
- Select a Sudoku puzzle of your desired difficulty.
- This will fire up the Kindle’s browser.
- You must set the browser to Advanced Mode (called Desktop Mode on Kindle DX) and you must enable JavaScript.
- The page will take up to 30 seconds to load your Sudoku puzzle.
While Playing -
- You can check for errors and remove wrong entries.
- You can have the game solve the puzzle for you or reset it.
- You can also ask for a clue.
It’s not stated explicitly – However, it seems you do not need wireless for all these checks.
Sudoku and Mathdoku by Robert Edison and The Yellow Stallion
Published: July 14th, 2009.
There are 3 volumes of Sudoku (first volume is $1 and has 10 puzzles) and there is 1 Mathdoku.
More on Sudoku –
- Clicking on a puzzle in the Sudoku book takes you to your browser.
- You have to turn wireless on to download puzzles (you can turn it off afterwards).
- You can then go about solving the puzzles.
There were various complaints (some of them unfair) -
- That $1 for 10 puzzles is too much. Seriously?
- The same person also thought the quality of puzzles was bad. No idea since am not a Sudoku expert.
- That keeping the wireless on drains the battery. You don’t have to – you just need it when downloading puzzles.
More on MathDoku -
- 20 puzzles for a dollar.
- Get Hints and check answers.
- Needs WhisperNet – not clear if it’s all the time or only when downloading puzzles.
Thoughts on Kindle Apps (lack thereof)
Got up this morning using an App (Sleep Cycle) that uses the iPhone’s accelerometer to monitor which sleep cycle you are in and wakes you up when you’re in light sleep. First night of using it – However, it does work.
Even if it didn’t – it’s such a cool idea. It uses just the iPhone and the accelerometer – it doesn’t even use the Internet.
The Kindle DX has an accelerometer and there’s nothing except page orientation being done with it. If a Kindle App Store were opened up the developer would gladly port it over to the Kindle DX. Wouldn’t that be nice?
Now, consider the amount of jumping through hoops the Sudoku developers had to do. Just to get a simple Sudoku working.
Amazon – Why not let developers add value to the Kindle? Let them do it simply.

Juliann Farnsworth has managed to get all 12 reviewers to give her book 5 star reviews – it’s called Time Storm 2012: Atlantis and the Mayan Prophecy and is a science fiction mystery with elements of action and romance and adventure.
Her book is just $1 and it seems rather interesting -
Time Storm 2012 is a science fiction mystery full of action, adventure and romance.
While doing research on the unusual occurrences in the Bermuda Triangle, Dr. Mark Turner, a scientist with a double Ph.D. in Oceanographic Seismology and Physics, will uncover something for which the government is willing to kill.
Getting more than he bargained for, his discoveries will not only unlock the mysteries of the Devil’s Triangle and the Mayan doomsday predictions about the year 2012, but also what happened to the lost city of Atlantis.
Will he make the ultimate sacrifice to save the world if it is even possible? His search for the truth will also lead him to love but is she an ally or is she an enemy?
The description is a bit overwhelming – However, all 12 reviewers giving a book 5 stars pretty much guarantees it’ll be good.

Would that mean you would have to sleep with the Kindle DX strapped to your arm?
No you just place the iphone (in future the kindle dx, hopefully) under the sheet (not under the mattress) near your pillow.
There’s a little test where it makes sounds and you can check that its detecting turns and tosses accurately and then you leave it there for the night. Takes up half an iphone charge.
Did you read the 12 reviews of “Time Storm 2012: Atlantis and the Mayan Prophecy”? I was thinking of buying it, but I’ll wait until there are more reviews from people not from the author’s hometown (Mesa, AZ), who can’t think of anything original to say…
good catch.
