First, the free kindle romance novel -

  1. Look What Santa Brought by Annmarie McKenna. Erotic Romance, 5 stars, 3 reviews.

Next, the cheap Kindle books -

  1. Triple Homicide by Charles Hynes. 4 stars across 5 customer reviews. Just $0.89. Hard-boiled Thriller/Mystery.
  2. At the City’s Edge by Marcus Sakey. 4 stars across 23 reviews. Just $0.87. Another hard-boiled mystery.
  3. The Interruption of Everything: A Novel by Terry McMillan. 3.5 stars with 140 customer reviews.
  4. For Liberty and Glory by James R. Gaines. 4.5 stars, 7 reviews.

Why are there so many free and cheap books?

Amazon must really want to get customers visiting them during Holiday Season or they really want to make people feel the Kindle has lots of free books and cheap books and make it more attractive than the nook. The amount of interest in the Nook is quite high – especially with the main stream media drumming it up.

The increased competition is great for readers.

Amazon starts Denim Shop.

Amazon have started taking ideas from their purchase of Zappos.com and started a Denim Shop.

It’s interesting to read TechFlash’s take on it. They’re right in that Amazon’s new Denim Shop is quite similar to Zappos -

  1. Free Shipping and Free Returns on Jeans.
  2. 30 day return period (Zappos has 365 days).

Look at all the areas Amazon has gotten into and a lot of it are big-ticket items i.e.

  1. High End Shoes with Endless.com.
  2. High End Jeans with their Denim Shop.
  3. Wireless with Amazon Wireless.

Amazon seem to be looking at the most profitable niches, especially areas that can’t be under-cut (because of unique products or subscription revenues or branding) and going into those.
