Continue to be amazed by the relentless supply of free books Amazon is plugging into the Kindle Store.
At what point does Kindle change from eReader to Amazon portal?
All the free books are a way to get people to Amazon. There’s no other explanation for why we’re seeing more free books in 2 weeks in November than we see in an entire normal month.
The Kindle itself is -
- A direct connection to Amazon.
- A channel Amazon doesn’t have to pay anyone for or share with anyone.
- On all the time.
Sooner or later Amazon are going to unlock the potential of the Kindle as a sales channel for Amazon.
Why not? It’s free, people are used to it, and it can be expanded in numerous ways.
- Kindle specific promotions.
- A Kindle App (on-board the Kindle) that lets you buy anything at Amazon.
- Add-ons to Kindle for PC and Kindle for iPhone that let you buy anything at Amazon.
- Price-match feature that matches price/deals from any store i.e. pull out your kindle and see if Amazon will price match or improve on a deal.
You can be sure that Amazon are collecting a lot of data -
- Do the free books make people visit Amazon.com more? Obviously – plus the deals are not relayed to Kindles so people have to find them online.
- Do people buy other things from Amazon?
- Do people buy more books or less due to free books?
Amazon is determining what user behaviour is and it’s going to get better and better at turning Kindle into a channel to sell everything.

Thanks for the links!
Hi switch11, I couldn’t find a link to send you an email, so I’ll just post this comment. I’m gearing up for the Holiday’s, and updating my wish lists, and came across something which I consider to be a big mistake on Amazon’s part.
There’s no way to buy Kindle Books for someone other than yourself.
Why is that a big problem? Well for me, a significant number of books that I own, were purchased for me by friends and family for birthdays, Christmas, whatever.
For this Christmas, I have no way for people to buy books for my new Kindle! I’m stuck with dead tree versions if I want to receive them as gifts. Which frankly, sucks.
Also my grandmother (who turns 95 next month) saw my Kindle, and now wants one. Large Print edition of books are huge, and she gets tired of lugging them around. She tried my Kindle and LOVED it. So the family is pooling our money to buy her a Kindle and some books.
Problem: We can’t buy her any books!
I know we can buy her an Amazon gift card, but really, a gift card isn’t quite the same as having her turn on her Kindle and finding some new books sitting in her reading list.
I hope Amazon takes note of Shawn’s comment… it really would be nice to be able to give books on Kindle as gifts, and receive them as well!!
yeah, agreed.
yes agreed, and also most of the books you are saying are free are not free to peeps from the UK. Why is Amazon doing that?
Territorial rights.
Not much Amazon can do about it. Book rights are auctioned off according to territories and perhaps Amazon doesn’t get agreements or doesn’t have the time to talk to a ton of different publishers every time they want to do a free book.
