First Half of 2010 we get Kindle Folders

Thanks to Adam for the update. The Kindle team has put an update up on its Facebook page that says -

“Kindle Customers, We have heard from many of you that you would like to have a better way to organize your growing Kindle libraries.

We are currently working on a solution that will allow you to organize your Kindle libraries.

We will be releasing this functionality as an over-the-air software update as soon as it is ready, in the first half of next year.

- The Kindle Team”

Awesome News ;)   It’s also on the official Kindle twitter stream.

Some quick thoughts on Folders

Users at the Kindle Forum were having a hard time believing that Folders for Kindle are finally being added.

I reported the Amazon Kindle Customer Service response as abuse.
Then realized, that the profile has an “official amazon” tag, so it must be true.

But, for them not to make an announcement and instead answer within a topic seems very odd.

I don’t know what to believe atm…

The reason everyone (including me) is skeptical -

  1. Folders has been a top 3 feature request forever. Since the first Kindle.
  2. Amazon has had zero responses forever.
  3. People had given up hope.
  4. Announcing it on Facebook? We wouldn’t mind getting an email or a post on the official blog first.

Now that the news has shown up everywhere it seems legitimate.

Most Wished For Folders Features

Any sort of Folders functionality is great. Here are a few things that would be nice add-ons to a basic folders feature –

  1. Tagging and tags.
  2. No limits on number of folders.
  3. Ability to change the order of Folders.
  4. Ability to change the names – including names of the default folders.
  5. An easier way to add images (photo albums).
  6. Graphic Display of Folders (as opposed to a boring list).
  7. Show the path to the folder we’re in, when we go down to a folder.
  8. Easy way to move around books (copy/paste perhaps).
  9. Option to copy a book into two folders.
  10. It’d be great if multiple levels were included i.e.

Kindle -> Mystery -> New Mystery Novels

Kindle -> Mystery -> Read Novels

    and so forth.

Some of these add-ons would be good to have.

The Benefits of Competition

Now that nook has scared Amazon we are seeing lots of features we should have all along i.e.

  1. Kindle for PC.
  2. (Soon) Kindle for Mac.
  3. (Soon) Folders.

Hopefully full-out PDF support gets added to that list.

The Kindle is going to evolve faster and do an even better job of meeting customer needs now that the nook is nipping at its heels.

  1. I hope Kindle 1 owners won’t be ignored. It seems absurd that many of us spent $350+(!) for our Kindles and less than a year later, were basically forgotten when it comes to firmware updates. I hope this isn’t the case with the folders. When people say “Get a Kindle 2″ I tell them that I shouldn’t have to shuck out $600.00 within 14 months to get the latest firmware upgrades. Seems basic, but Amazon has really messed the early adopters around poorly.

  2. The lack of a folder structure is my only serious beef with my kindle 1. I can live with the other several challenges but no folders? Come on, really? really?, amazon? What century do you live in? Even the old library cards had labeled drawers!
