7 kindle books for free, 4 free whitepapers

Let’s start off with the 7 kindle free books -

  1. Amazon added Ulysses by James Joyce and it’s predictably shooting up the charts. Dubliners and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man are right below it in the ‘Customers who Bought This’ section.
  2. Free PDF download of Seth Godin’s new book – What Matters Now. Courtesy Lone Wolf Librarian. It’s quite interesting – 70 big thinkers (Tom Peters, Tim O’Reilly, and more) each with an idea to think about in 2010.
  3. Raising Atlantis by Thomas Greanias is $6.39 in the Kindle Store – Random House had a promotion a while back (which was mentioned here) and forgot to remove the Free PDF version. It helps promote the latest version so perhaps they should leave it as is.
  4. Abingdon Press has a free book in the Kindle Store – The Prayers of Agnes Sparrow by Joyce Magnin. 4.5 stars on 8 reviews (found via MobileRead).
  5. Whores of the Court by Margaret A. Hagen, Ph.D. is a free PDF download and a critique of the way psychology is used in American courts.
  6. No Bugs - Free in Kindle and PDF formats. The author says the first two chapters are still very relevant for programmers although this is a 1995 C, C++ book.
  7. George Washington University might still have a free copy of Kalooki Nights for you.

6:27 pm Update: Free Audible BookThe Book of the Shepherd by Joann Davis.

4 free white papers from MIT Press. These are all short i.e. 70-80 pages.

  1. The Future of Learning Institutions in a Digital Age by Cathy N. Davidson and David Theo Goldberg.
  2. The Civic Potential of Video Games by Joseph Kahne, Ellen Middaugh, and Chris Evans.
  3. Living and Learning with New Media: Summary of Findings from the Digital Youth Project by Mizuko Ito et al.
  4. Young People, Ethics, and New Digital Media: A Synthesis from the Good Play Project by Carrie James.

There’s also a free pre-order which isn’t showing up for purchase yet.

Also interesting is Zagg’s 50% off, one day only sale on Invisible Shield for the Kindle -

  • $12.50 for a scratch proof screen protector.
  • $17.50 for a scratch proof full body protector.

They say it also improves your grip and doesn’t add bulk.

Free Books are a BIG, undocumented benefit of eReaders

There must be some value to all the new, free eBooks you can read on eReaders.

  1. How do you factor in the 10-20 free book offers the Kindle Store sees every month?
  2. For that matter how do you factor in all the free offers from Simon & Schuster and Indie authors and all the offers around the Net?

Perhaps you can put a monetary value to it – $10 a month? $20?

The Monstrumologist is perhaps the best book I’ve read this year and it was free – Unfortunately there is no follow-up book to read. Perdido Street Station got voted one of the best 20 sci-fi books of the decade and it was free for a while.

There’s just a lot that can be done to better sell eReaders - highlighting Kindle Store free book offers is one obvious opportunity.
