Free Kindle Book from Scholastic, Kindle Thoughts

Finally we get a free kindle book and this one is from Scholastic and suited for grades 7 through 12 -

  1. Suite Scarlett by Maureen Johnson. Rated very highly – 4.5 stars on 30 reviews.

Apparently Maureen Johnson, the author of our free book of the day, twittered (or is it tweeted) about this 7 hours ago.

Surprised there aren’t other free books – they’re usually released in groups of 3 or 4.

Kindle 1 day free shipping today

Amazon has free 1-day shipping on the Kindle today.

A related thought (stolen ;)  from the official kindle forum) -

  1. Exactly how many people are going to get Kindles tomorrow?
  2. What reactions do we see - Will there suddenly be a million or a half a million more people buying books and searching for kindle tips?

Given that AT&T’s network is already over-taxed there’s a slight chance that this Christmas Kindle sees longer than 60 second book downloads.

Children’s Books continue to be hot

A few interesting notes to add -

  1. Greenwich Time (Greenwich, CT) write about how eBooks are poised to make an impact in schools
  2. Wall Street Journal lets us know that Sesame Street has launched its first set of iPhone Book Apps. They’re $1.99 each.

Children’s books and using the Kindle in school are both hot, hot topics that are finally beginning to get attention.

Bestselling Authors of the Decade

The Telegraph has a list of the best-selling authors of the decade (for the UK) -

1) J K Rowling – 29,084,999 books sold. £225.9 million.
2) Roger Hargreaves – 14,163,141 books sold. £26.6 million.
3) Dan Brown – 13,372,007 books sold. £74.1 million.
4) Jacqueline Wilson – 12,673,148 books sold. £69.9 million.
5 Terry Pratchett – 10,455,397 books sold. £77.2 million.

The list is actually a Top 100 list.

Here are the things that spring to mind -

  1. Perhaps some of these authors will jump ship to the Kindle like Stephen Covey.
  2. Superstar authors should be paid like superstars.
  3. Perhaps in 3 years we live in a world where authors get 25% or more of the revenue they generate. Either that or we get an alternate world where the value of books drops and authors make very little.
  4. The difference between J. K. Rowling and everyone else is huge – she’s generated more than double the revenue of anyone else.
  5. Cookbooks are hot – Jamie Oliver, Nigella Lawson and Gordon Ramsey are on the list.

Wonder if someone will create a list like this for the US or perhaps even the whole world. That would be really cool.
