Next, we have the great size wars.
eReader Size Wars get turned up a Notch
Aving and Fast Company have coverage and photos of LG’s 19″ almost-newspaper size eReader screen.
- Yes, it really is 19″ and it drowns out Hearst and Que and other 11.5″ eReaders.
- The price will almost certainly be as gigantic as the screen.
- LG has tied up with eInk - We were hoping for things more productive than size contests.
Aving write -
LG Display has developed the world’s largest flexible electronic-paper screen measuring 25cm by 40cm, which translates into a 19-inch screen size
With 0.3mm thickness and 130g weight, it utilizes a metal foil instead of a traditional glass to make itself both flexible and durable.
Fast Company think the 19″ display is perfect for eNewspapers -
Clearly LG is pushing the large screen size as ideal for digital newspapers…and that might be the only strategy that works, for a short while: Large LCD or OLED screens would be unwieldy, fragile and expensive for the same role.
Fast Company adds the obligatory ‘eReaders are going to die anyways’ comment.
Here’s a more pressing eReader concern -
Why is it that we can get 11.5″ and 19″ flexible, indestructible displays and we still haven’t managed to get one in a 6″ size?

I just want a decent 8″ size e-ink screen. 6″ is too small, and 10″ is too large to easily carry around, let alone 19″. I measured the print sizes in a few print books on my shelf and they are all in the 7 to 9″ range. If these readers are going to mimic books, then inch up a bit!
that’s a good point on screen size – 7″ to 8″ is better than 6″ and it can be done in the Kindle form factor. The iRex DR800 is an option.
has anyone seen any details on the LG displays. At SID last year they had only 4 levels of grey and an unusual integrated optical touch system that back in June 2009 did not work all that well.
