Wanted to create a list of good app ideas to help developers considering the Kindle App Store and let Kindle owners vote for ideas they like.
Please do add your own app ideas and spread the word.
Have spent most of today reading various people’s thoughts on the forthcoming Kindle App Store. Here are various good app ideas people have suggested – websites are only credited the first time. Classifying them according to potential revenue opportunity as Developers need to eat – just like writers and the rest of us.
Apps that could earn $100K+ a year
All these lists are based on the following assumptions -
- There are millions of Kindle owners (1-3 million).
- There will be millions of Kindle owners added in 2010 (2-5 million).
- A very good app (this section) could capture 10% to 20% of Kindle owners.
- A good app (next section) could capture 2% to 4% of Kindle Owners.
- Apps will retail between $1 and $10. Users will prefer to pay between $1 and $5.
- That it’ll be the best app for each idea listed that makes the money. The #5 Folders App is going to make next to nothing.
Please note that all communication apps are left out of this $100K+ a year section since the data charges make these inherently unprofitable.
Also, some of these app ideas might not meet Amazon’s conditions for entry into the store.
User App Ideas – $100K+ a year Apps.
These are from comments on the blog –
- Folders (thanks to lots of people) – This could be a $500K a year app. At the minimum a $200K a year app.
- PDF Viewer (thanks to Pamela) - An easy $100K+ a year app. Amazon disallows generic readers so PDF converters would have the best shot.
- Email Clients and Email Synchronization (Pamela, Gayle) – Huge, huge potential although due to data costs it would have to be a subscription service.
- eBook Corrections App (George) – An app that lets you correct mistakes in an eBook including meta data.
- Font++ App (George) – Change Fonts, change line and paragraph spacing, use bold fonts, allow more font sizes. This could be a $250K+ a year app.
- Improved Web Browser (George) - This would never break-even because people would surf too much and kill the developer with data costs.
- Custom Screensavers (Dan) – This might not seem like a $100K+ profits app but it might explode.
- Notepad App (Elizabeth) – An app that everyone needs and at $1 a lot of people would snap it up.
- Bookshelf App – Someone is going to do this for free to try to get publicity or sabotage the Kindle Store. However, it would otherwise have been a great, great app to make money from.
These are apps guaranteed to do extremely well. The biggest danger is people coding free apps – though the inability to run ads lessens this danger.
Reading related Kindle App Ideas – Over $100K a year Apps
Please note that generic readers are not allowed -

- Privacy App – Option to change certain book titles to generic ones. Options to hide certain documents.

A lot of the communication apps would have to be subscription services due to the high data usage.
- Instant Message client that supports all the usual suspects – yahoo, msn messenger, etc.
- Email Client.
- Radio.
- Facebook App.
- Twitter Client – via GearLog.
- Pet Apps.
- Virtual Pet Apps.
- Kindle to Kindle App.
- Sokobahn via MobileRead.
- MUDs.
- Virtual Piano/Music Instruments.
Borderline Kindle App Ideas
Apps that may or may not be worth the work (ideas mostly stolen from Apple App Store) -
- Memory View/Organizer App – Let’s you see what amounts of memory different things take, etc.
- Password Manager.
- GTD App.
- Battery Tracker App with percentages, minute tracking, wireless on/off battery life, etc.
- White Noise App to drown out background noise.
- Sports Scores – via PC World. The data costs make it difficult to earn a ton of money from this.
- Google Docs.
- Kindle optimized Web Sites. Not sure exactly what PC World have in mind here.
Will keep updating this list – Please do add your own ideas and do vote for apps and ideas you like.

Hasn’t Amazon already announced they will be putting folders on the Kindle? I don’t see this as being a money maker for anyone.
I’m not real excited about the possibility of apps on my Kindle. I like the fact that it’s a dedicated ereader device. And, the fact that I can so easily retrieve items I archive means I don’t have to keep every book I own on my Kindle so even folders are no big deal to me. Note that I’ve only had my Kindle about a month though.
I think Amazon needs to be careful positioning Kindle and stop inviting comparisons to the Apple Tablet which is going to KILL the Kindle on functionality. The Kindle is a cheap, dedicated ereader. I would guess most people who own a Kindle already own a smart phone and the Kindle 2 will not be able to compete against a tablet computer.
I wouldn’t mind a full calendar which syncs with google calendar, including multiple calendars, etc. I wonder if the people at OggSync would want to try it. I can view my calendar now through the web browser, but it would be nice to have it available off line.
I can deal with getting my gmail through the web browser, but a better gmail interface would be nice. I can’t get to Exchange Server using the Kindle briowser. Being able to access it online would be nice. Being able to read both off line would be better.
Heck, a full blown pim which syncs with google & Exchange would be great. I’ve paid in thr neighborhood of $25 for it on my cell phone; I can’t be the only one who would love it on the Kindle’s larger screen.
A journal / blog program would be interesting. (In other words, a journal which could create blog articles for blogspot, wordpress, etc.)
I could easily see dropping $50 on good productivity software in the first year. The Kindle screen would be much better than a cell phone screen. While having my pim on my phone is convenient, I miss the page size of a Franklin Covey planner. (I don’t miss carrying around an inch and a half binder every where I went.)
I do want an app so that I can interact with Shelfari.com directly from the kindle. I use Shelfari to track what I’m reading, when I finish books, etc. Unfortunately, their website doesn’t play nicely with the kindle browser, but it seems like it would make a perfect little app. If they jumped on the kindle bandwagon, it seems it would give them something over their competitors (goodreads, librarything, etc)
the rest of the ideas are good too. i do want folders/tagging. custom screensavers would be nice, but i’m not sure i’d be willing to pay money for it. honestly, most apps, i don’t think i’d be willing to pay much for… i need to save my money for books
What about the epub reader idea?
Generic readers are not allowed – no ePub readers will be let in. If you want ePub request Amazon to add support themselves.

I was on the fence for months before I finally decided to order my Kindle 2. I had been reading such mixed reviews about the device and about Amazon’s customer service that I simply could not decide about the purchase. This review is for all of those people, like me, that cannot decide if they need a Kindle 2 for themselves. Well, struggle with the decision no more and ORDER IT! I am so happy with my Kindle 2 and I look forward to reading it every single day. All of the problems that I was worried about are not problems at all. Downloading books is easy, the screen is NOT too dark, the font size is adjustable and the Kindle customer service support is terrific. I had a problem with my Kindle 2 and I was instantly connected with the most helpful representative. I did not have to wait on hold and the problem was solved in no time. I have made the highest recommendations of the Kindle 2 to my friends and family and will continue to do so in the future. I can say with absolute confidence, if you order your own Kindle 2 you will not be disappointed!!!
