I would be heartbroken to see that time come to pass because I had a desire to create works and feel there's been such a fundamental change in human habit that speed, not knowledge, I fear, are more valued.

I dread the death of something I feel as that basic, I feel it means the actual death of humanity as I know it. When I see people driven more by technology based information, I feel like there's a sort of blankness like those people are programmed more than actually human, but I suppose in all epochs of great change SOMETHING needs to be sacrificed for the "advancement" of human culture...

I love the new ereaders (like Kindle) but do not see them completely replacing all books in print. While great for mass market fiction as well all similar books (a large portion of the market) they have yet to find a way to replace large scale picture/photo books, and many specialized vocational books, as well.
As for Bookstores going out of business...I still love going in the smaller local book shops, and hope they survive after the mega stores all go under...

The Death of the Used Bookstore as you see it doesn't make any since. All because of the great "ebook" the Publishers are the real Cry Babies! So now the Publishers have come up with this new tool in which they are leasing the "ebook" to a lot of foolish people. And you and a lot of other people who buy the great "ebook" feel they have the Power to Demand the Publishers set there "ebook" prices low? God you must live in fantasy land?

It's important to note that libraries haven't just been about books in years. It's still the centerpiece and the primary function, for now, but the role of the library is at its base about providing free and (more or less) equal access to information to everyone. That's why they have CDs, and movies, and (in some cases) videogames, and internet access computers, and so on and so forth. I expect that a cultural shift to ebooks would mean a stronger emphasis on these other aspects of their role, or perhaps some new functions entirely.

Why assume that libraries are/will be limited to the number of eReaders they have. If a library owns three copies of a paper book they can loan out those books three at a time. If those three copies were eBooks then they could still loan out up to three copies at once. The only difference is that I could check out, read and return the eBook without ever having to visit the library. The only limiting factor I see is how the publishers will control the lending of eBooks by libraries.
