Saturday Night and it’s time for a free kindle romance novel -

Heat of Passion: An Out of Uniform Story by Elle Kennedy.

The ever-changing nature of free book offers makes me wonder.

How long should a free book promotion be to be most effective?

There are lots of scenarios -

1. If it’s to promote a new book perhaps the free offer on an older book should start a month or so before release and continue for a few months after release. 
2. If it’s the first book in a series free to promote the entire series it makes sense to let it go on forever. 
3. If it’s an attempt to boost a book’s sales rank a few days would work.
4. If you’re trying to gain exposure then perhaps your book is permanently free.
5. If it’s a publisher attempting to make a name perhaps they should do rotating free book offers in a genre like BelleBooks and Samhain do.

There are also some things to watch out for -

1. Restricting the free book offer to the US gets non-US customers upset.
2. Having it for a day or less means people miss out and feel bad about it – Disappointment is hardly what you’d want them to associate your books with.
3. Bad formatting and bad editing on a free book spoils readers’ impression of your work.

It’s important to actually have a good product out and to give readers enough time to find out about it and try it out.
