LOL! That's hilarious. Love it!

@Andrew, I published my paranormal romance novella Kept on the Kindle a year and a half ago with no fanbase built. I'm now normally in the 500's and 600's of the Kindle store and maintaining in the top 15 of the Vampire Romance category. I'm on target to sell 900 copies of Kept this month if I maintain the per day average I have currently through the end of the month.

I just released (as in it was available in the Kindle store on Sunday), my second novella, Claimed. It's aleady under 2k in the Kindle store with 8 reviews because of the platform I've been building.

I have a long way to go to get where Joe is, but... I know I can do it.

And I did NOT have a major publisher or a backlist, or etc.

I'm curious why you feel getting a book published is the best way to acquire a fan base.

I admire JK for the way he has gone boots and all into Kindle publishing. He's doing well for himself, and so he should. I don't know how applicable it is to those of use with no fanbase though... and still, sadly, th best way to hit a fanbase is to get your book published by one of the top 5 (6?)

Funny, but Konrath still has a traditional publishing contract. He's not an idiot. While moving a dying/dead series character to AmazonEncore is a great idea and could possibly trigger change in the industry, hopefully waking up the big 6 and getting them to rethink their business model, traditional publishing is still the way to go if you have the opportunity. It might not be in 5 years, but it is right now.
