My Kindle DX 2 arrived today – so here are some videos and all the details.

Kindle DX 2 Review Video – The Videos

The videos are taking really long to upload so will add more as they get uploaded. Please check out the videos at the Kindle DX 2 Videos Page. They slow down this page too much so moving them there - there are lots of Kindle DX 2 videos.

Kindle DX 2 Review Photos

Here are some Kindle DX 2 Photos that’ll help you see the contrast. They’re really big so putting them on a separate page instead of including them on this one. You can click-through for the full size images to really dig into the screens. Will add more – all of WordPress is slow today for some reason so even photos are taking ages to load.

Kindle DX 2 Review Video – Quick Thoughts

It’s beautiful.

  1. 40% better contrast than the Kindle DX. At least it seems that way to me. It doesn’t really seem like 50% better contrast plus graphite casing. It is however very, very noticeable and much better than the Kindle DX’s screen.
  2. 25% better than my Kindle 2 Global’s screen. The screen on that was very good so the difference doesn’t seem as stark as with the Kindle DX.
  3. The background is pretty white. As opposed to a very light grey on the Kindle DX 1 the background on the Kindle DX 2 seems white.
  4. Amazon (or perhaps eInk) use a very interesting way to improve screen contrast. There are very tiny speckles on the screen that help make the contrast better. It’s almost the way you can add a tiny bit of noise to an image to make the image higher contrast. These speckles are definitely missing from the Kindle and the Kindle DX 1 so it’s a new addition.
  5. Would definitely take the new Kindle DX 2 screen over the Kindle DX 1 and the Kindle. It’s much better – However, don’t know if it’s worth the $379 upgrade.

Basically, the screen is definitely a very big improvement – Just don’t know if that’s enough to justify upgrading. It does make the Kindle DX 2 the best Kindle to buy if screen contrast is your #1 priority.

  1. have you looked at the new and old screens with the same color bezel around them (e.g. a white peice of paper)? I saw a new DX briefly and wondered how much visual pop was due to the dark bezel compared to the previos gen white bezel
