"...A fond goodbye – that’s what Kindle 2.5 seems like..."

The 2.5 software update includes incremental improvements that will be included in any future model. It is not a huge expense to make a version for current Kindles and it sends a big message - stick with us, we will not abandon you so quickly. Further - the social platform needs to be built and for that to happen, those elements of the update needed to be out there and available to 'the family' of Kindlers.

My only question is, why would they go through the hassle with the 2.5 (and subsequent) update(s) if they are releasing a newer Kindle?

I'm sure a new Kindle will come and probably soon and maybe the August rumors are right. But maybe the new Kindle (6"), is going to be like the new DX. Is that enough to make people who already own Kindles purchase a new one? Will it be popular enough or will people wait out for another version later on as there are many wishes people have for a newer Kindle.

The price drop was in response to Barnes and Noble dropping the price of the nook. Rather than have people go over and buy a nook because it was a good chunk of change cheaper, they reduced the price to keep in competition.

They have also put the Kindles out in stores.

It is possible that they just ran out of stock because that is a very popular price and those who were on the fence jumped off and scooped the Kindle up.

I guess we'll find out in a week. If it's just the graphite model like the DX, meh. I will not purchase a new Kindle.

Oh, yes, this is what I've been waiting for. I decided a few months ago that I wanted an ereader, but I've been waiting for the fabled Kindle 3 in August, and it looks like it's going to actually happen.

As for the price, there's no real way that Amazon would sell it for more than $189, I don't think. Being even ten bucks cheaper than the Nook is a helpful selling point. Even if it's hurting their margins, Amazon has demonstrated that they're willing to sacrifice immediate profit for long-term gain (look at they way they used to sell ebooks at a loss before the agency model kicked in).

I figure that the normal model with Whispernet will remain $189, and they may release a version that has only WiFi for $139 or so either when Kindle 3 is announced or shortly afterward.
