Kindle Fire Thoughts

5 million Kindle Fire sales are predicted for 2011

The general consensus seems to be that Amazon will sell between 3 million and 5 million Kindle Fires in 2011.

DigiTimes claims that Amazon upped its supply of Kindle Fires from 3.5 million to 5 million. A bold move.

40 to 60 million iPad sales are predicted for 2012

Would just like to make a note that in times before the launch of Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet the predictions were:

  1. 40 to 60 million iPad sales in 2012.
  2. iPad sales stabilizing in the same range.
  3. Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet and other Tablets never getting to as much of a market share as iPad.

These are very important figures to keep in mind as we go into 2012 and 2013 and see the effect of low-priced Tablets on the overall Tablet market. Of course, Apple might cut prices to $299 and change the nature of the contest. However, if it doesn’t, it will be very, very interesting to see how long Apple users are willing to pay a huge premium for a device which even according to its owners is mostly a tech toy.

Why no one is mentioning Nook Color and Kobo Vox and Nook Tablet

Realized why all the Kindle Fire reviews insist on comparing it with $500 tablets.

It’s a fear of the unknown.

Tech journalists are wary of these low-priced tablets that are meant not for the tech intelligentsia, but for everyday users.

They would rather compare it to the devices they ‘feel’ are what Tablets should be, rather than to devices in the same category. If they talk about Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet and Kobo Vox – they fear they might end up destroying the sales of the ‘true tech journalist approved tablets’.

Why ship a day early? Why ship Kindle Touch 5 days early?

Amazon probably realizes (and so did companies like Zappos) that the shipping is a key part. People regularly write 5-star reviews for electronic devices where their biggest happiness is that they got the device 1 or 2 days earlier.

When you buy something – that moment of getting it and unwrapping it and seeing it for the first time is magical. If you expect the pleasure on Thursday and get it on Tuesday – you’re just happier. Of course, it translates into 1 million ‘Kindle Fire unboxing’ videos. Let’s hope someone can pull off a ‘watch my cat unbox my kindle while scratching the gorilla glass’ video.

It’s an easy way to get free karma and predispose users to give better reviews. Under-promise and over-deliver. Amazon, with all its data on purchasing and reviews, figured this out and has been making the most of it – It’s pulled the same trick the last 3 Kindle releases, and it probably will keep doing it.

  1. yeah, don’t these tech whiz kids realize that Kindle Fire and iPad aren’t even true competitors? Kindle Fire is more a competitor with Walmart than it is Apple. But I guess those tech guys are just way too smart to figure that out. Plus, they can’t run a Steve Jobs god-like mug shot with the Big Brother smirk with their articles.

  2. Yes, but the “free karma” thing isn’t working for me. I ordered on the first day, Prime 2-day delivery, and generally speaking would have been quite happy to receive the Fire on the 17th. In this case, though, I now know that Amazon managed to get the Fire to Wal-Mart before it delivered to me, and I also see that some folks who purchased much later, also with 2-day shipping, are getting theirs today. Quite illogically, I feel a bit gypped.

    1. They don’t have that option, but they do have “click to look inside.” That can be helpful (or not) depending on how much is included in the sample. Awhile back, I came across one book that had only the cover and title page. Others have the complete first chapter. I don’t know if that will help, but I often use it to decide if I want to get a book.

  3. Atria International Books of Mystery is a pre-order with the book not being delivered until March 17, 2012. The size is listed as 5 kb.

I googled the name and found it to be a page on the Simon and Schuster website. With the subtitle of: “Your online destination for the best thrillers and mysteries from around the world.”

If the “title” isn’t a book but a website, what exactly would we be getting?
