Jeff Bezos and the Genie

The waves spoke softly to the man as he walked on the white ever-shifting sands of the beach. He was a man given to laughing freely but the lines on his face were far from a smile. Years of toiling for little reward had sunken his shoulders and the hard sun had taken its share.

He walked and ignored the calming whispers of the waves. He had to figure out a way. A way before his troubles overwhelmed him. The weight on his heart was so heavy it was a wonder he didn’t sink into the teasing white sands, shifting even as he walked over them.

His foot hit something and he looked down as he cursed his luck. It wasn’t enough that the fates had made a mockery of his labors. They were now heaping on insults.

He stopped as he realized what he was looking at. Could it really be? No, no it couldn’t be. He looked at it incredulously.

He picked it up gingerly. It had a glow to it that seemed to course through the old brass. A river of light that ran the length of its finely crafted body and collected at the spout. He brushed off the sand speckles and just as he was about to open it he heard a voice.

The genie was wearing a white suit. He had a Turban on, and it somehow worked well with the suit. His legs disappeared into a fine mist, which seemed to blend into the ocean effortlessly.

He repeated his words and the man registered them for the first time.

*What will your wish be?

The man thought for a minute.

Don’t I get 3 wishes.

*This isn’t a fairy tale. You only get one wish.

The man thought for a long time. The Genie stood and waited. If he had feet he probably would have tapped them impatiently.

I want to control all of the business I’m in. I want to replace them all.

The Genie looked at the man with bemusement.

*Are you sure? You can wish for anything. Unmeasurable Riches? The most delicious Food and Wine? Countless Jewels? A Ferrari with the top down?

No, no. I know what I wish for. I want to replace them and have everything to myself. I want all the control.

The Genie looked at the man for a long time. Then he spoke though he seemed not to relish in the speaking.

You are a strange man to be asking for something you can neither touch nor taste. You shall have your wish. Go now and leave me to contemplate the strangeness of what you’ve wished for.

The Genie stood there for a long time, though what is time for a Genie but a speck of sand on the beach. The Genie looked out at the fading sunset and wondered about the man and his wish. It was a long time since the Genie had met one who asked for things such as this.

***5 Years Later

The man had spent all day trying to find the part of the beach where he had stumbled upon the Genie. This was a remote part of France and much had changed in the years since he had last been here. It was almost dark when he saw the cliffs and realized he had found his destination.

He ran across the white sands towards where he had found the lamp. He searched and he dug and he got more and more frantic as his efforts unearthed nothing but pure white sand. He despaired and collapsed on the sands and closed his eyes and wished he had never met the Genie.

*You have to find the lamp first.

The man’s eyes snapped open in surprise. The Genie was back. This time the Genie was dressed in the traditional Arabic attire any self-respecting Genie should stick to.

What did you say?

*I said – If you’re going to wish for things, you have to find the lamp first.

The man’s eyes grew angry. He looked at the Genie and searched for the right words but they would not come. He couldn’t bear to look at the Genie as he thought of the terrible fate that had befallen him. He kneeled down and put his head in his hands. Finally, he spoke, though he still held his head in his hands.

Genie, what have you done.

*I gave you what you wished for. You have control. You control most of it and soon you will control it all.

The man looked up at the Genie.

But you’ve destroyed everything. What I control is becoming worthless. Every day it loses more and more. Where is all the wealth that controlling it should have led to?

The Genie looked at the man and even in his old, old Genie heart he felt a tinge of sadness.

*You never said anything about wealth. You just wanted control. You wanted the control that they had. Now you have it. That was your wish.

The man grabbed at the sands in frustration but they slipped through his fingers much as everything else seemed to have.

I didn’t say anything about wealth? What sort of useless Genie are you. It was all about the wealth, you idiot. The control would lead to the wealth. That was understood. What have you done Genie. You’ve destroyed it all.

The Genie stood and gazed upon the man with eyes that had seen countless men and women get exactly what they wished for and then decide it wasn’t really what they wanted.

*No matter what I gave you, it would never be enough.

The man ignored the thrust of the genie’s words and started looking around. The Lamp. If he could find the lamp he could get the Genie to undo the harm. If only he could find the lamp.

The Genie stood and watched. It was a beautiful night and the moon shone down upon the birds that skimmed above the water like skipping stones. The Genie watched quietly as the man searched frantically for the lamp.

It’s always the same, the Genie thought. They all want things that mean so much to them. Then they get them and mean nothing at all and they want something else.
