By DRM I mean the lack of mobility between stores.

If there were no DRM, then you could move your books from Amazon to any other app freely. That's what I mean.

You're right that Amazon makes it easy to browse.

However, if it was very easy to move to another store, then it would allow room for a new company to make things very easy and win you over.
Right now it's hard because as you said -

converting over 2800 books is a large project as well as violating my license agreement with Amazon.

As someone who has both a tablet and an eReader, they both have a purpose in my life. I have a Sony eReader, and I love it, I use it a lot when I'm outside(which is A LOT for about 6 months of the year) because its e-ink screen is easier to read than a tablet screen, but I love my tablet if I'm inside because I can read or play games on it(it also comes in handy for distracting the kid on long car trips, lol).

By DRM do you mean single format? If not I'm confused.

You do know that on Amazon books can be sold without DRM? It's an option. Many indies don't put DRM on their books once they understand what DRM does and doesn't do. In addition Baen Publishing does not have DRM on their books on kindle store and states it on every book they have for sale.

Baen also did some kind of study and showed that pirate rates were lower on their books than for the rest of the industry. Unfortunately it has not changed their parent company's behavior.

You can also sell mobi files on Shmashwords as well as your own website without DRM. Or sell them in all formats for all ereaders. EPub really should be the standard.

I buy mostly from Amazon because they are the easiest for me to browse. I have kobo and nook apps on my iPad but they rarely get used as its easier for me to keep track of everything I own in one place and converting over 2800 books is a large project as well as violating my license agreement with Amazon.

I'm looking for convenience, easy browsing, a reasonable price, and the ability to share books with my husband even though we have separate accounts. If someone came up with all that I'd switch in a minute. Unfortunately so far no one comes close to Amazon for book browsing.

Regarding the Kindle Paperwhite basic and the Paperwhite 2: there seems to be some discussion that Paperwhite 2 is better because of its HD screen. Let me assure you, and ALL potential purchasers of either device: you will not tell any difference is reading font. The basic Paperwhite is totally clear and crisp. There is absolutely no need for any higher resolution (except to come out with a new Version 2.x for sales purposes). Along that same line, the graphics/drawings/pics on the Paperwhite 2 are so good that nothing else is really required. The reason for the lack of further resolution is the 'screen size'. Only an increase in screen size would necessitate a higher resolution. So, save your beer money and go with the basic Paperwhite unit. Anyone who says different is just out to try and sell more Paperwhite 2 units, me do thinks.

Let me ask you a question - What category do you fall into?

I think you're assuming everyone else is like you.

There are two things here -

1) Power of the Default.

2) eReaders that simply can't read other formats.

For the latter, the option doesn't exist. I know a lot of people who don't own DEDICATED eReaders are under the misconception that they are more important than those who do. That's not true.

People with dedicated reading devices buy more ebooks. So, firstly, they are the more important group.

Secondly, what percentage of users of apps etc. diverge from the DEFAULT choice?

I think it's the opposite with Calibre. People who've found Calibre seem to believe everyone else also has is or should have it or uses it or will.
